If the captain isn't immune to beasts and there's caragor bait or caragor cages nearby, feel free to lure / release caragors to harass the captain. Second, the environment can always be used to your advantage. Make use of their weaknesses and avoid letting them utilise their strengths.įor example, if a captain is immune to beasts, but weak to executions, don't attack him whilst mounted on a caragor - instead, build up your hitstreak on the basic orcs until you can use an execution, then use it on the captain for a lot of damage. They provide intel on captains, which let you know their strengths and weaknesses. These are the orcs with the green symbol above their head, who can be grabbed and interrogated. To level the playing field there are many actions you can take. Again, though, the odds are never in your favour. You will always be outnumbered when attacking a captain, which is usually fine because once you've got the hang of the combat system, you can clear out the basic orcs pretty quick. Respawning, sure, but definitely killable. One of the big parts of both Middle Earth games is that despite how powerful the Gravewalker is, he's not invincible. Whether you’re rounding out your sound with a simple stereo backing track or a set of separate, mixable stems, all you have to do is step on a foot switch to jump to the next marker, adjust the tempo, arrange on the fly, or fade out smoothly. With Playback, your Mac becomes a flexible, reliable backing track player. And the next you can be creating bass loops with an external synth against an Ultrabeat drum pattern. One minute you can be playing some heavily distorted guitar with a full backing band. Each Patch works as a self-contained audio mixer and router, so you can completely change direction mid-performance. That means everything you use to perform is right on your Mac, giving you total control. MainStage features ReWire and MIDI-out support. With just the controls you need onscreen for your song, you’ll never have to hunt for the right knob. And you can set things up so each control is linked to a different parameter in each Patch. You get a full-screen, high-contrast, and high-resolution (Retina display-supported) view of your controls, so they stand out from across the stage. The MainStage and Smart Controls interface is designed especially for live performance. Knobs, faders, and switches you can’t miss. And you can easily use your favorite hardware to control every nuance of your performance. With the Mac as the core of your live rig, setup is faster, teardown is faster, and everything in between is more reliable. You’ll also find new features like an improved Mixer, easier-to-use channel strips, and more. You can even expand your show with prerecorded backing tracks. Everything from the Sound Library and Smart Controls you're familiar with from Logic Pro X is integrated into MainStage 3. Love the sound you got on your recording? MainStage 3 makes it easy to bring all the same instruments and effects to the stage. It's much more convenient to test in this mode at first - you control the application completely, you make it executable, run it from the command line, stop it at any moment with Ctrl+C, check actual output. Visit to pick one for yourself. With game news, not much to tell other then more playing of LOTRO, and a bit of pen-and-paper rpging with the new 4th edition DnD rules. I also managed to make a little progress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars which is still a pretty entertaining, if simple, watch. Going to be hard to wait for the 4.5 DVDs (or I'll see if I can track down an alternative til I can purchase the discs). Season 3 certainly ended with a OMGWTFBBQ moment which was completely awesome, and they are definitely doing a good job at tying up loose ends so far in season 4. In related news - I've finished up the first half of the fourth season of Battlestar Galactica. Unless you must have everything Clannad I recommend giving this a pass and going with the much better TV series. (Admittedly, the movie apparently came out in 2004, but it still doesn't quite live up to high-budget standards back then too, in my opinion). The animation, while clean, has serious problems with cheap tricks to avoid animation where possible, and ends up looking worse then its TV counterpart. Several characters are cut from the story to facilitate a shorter run time, and yet the movie still tries to cover the same amount of ground that the two TV series did - recklessly hacking and slashing away at the story til it is hardly recognizable. In contrast is the movie, which was created by the same group that did the lackluster Air movie and canceled first Kanon adaptation (see a pattern?). In short - an excellent series in combination with its predecessor, and one that, for me, is contending with the #1 slot. And we finally know the story behind the scenes of the girl and the robot in the empty wasteland. The series also delivers in the storytelling department, serious when it needs to be, with a good sprinkling of humor to help prevent things from getting to morose at points. The animation is just as good as the first series, which is quite good, and the voice acting is also well done (at least as much as I can gauge Japanese voice acting). Which is a pretty impressive time span for an anime. Finished up another anime series this last week, Clannad: ~After Story~ as well as the Clannad movie, which is essentially just a retelling of the story in movie form.Īfter Story takes place directly after the first season on Clannad, following Tomoya and Nagisa as they finish high school, get married, and their first child. Simply think of them as passion flowers yet to blossom! Of course, shopaholic bibliophiles (of which there are many of us) may also have a ready-made dabbling shelf thanks to past purchases, as yet not fully explored. Your never know – those first steps just might turn into a lifelong passion. Learn a couple of basic words and phrases, and listen out for whether those sounds speak to your heart. Remind yourself that there is no harm in doing a few tentative lessons in a new language to see if you like it. And dabbling is a great way to test the water for new projects on the polyglot trail. Polyglots are always on the lookout for their next big language love. As personal proof, I recently spent a couple of weeks marvelling over the differences between Norwegian and Swedish (Coffee and wine are neuter?! Wolf is varg and not ulv?!) and I feel more informed, not more confused. In fact, our brains are much more resilient to this than we think, and research into bilinguals provides some evidence for this. Personally, I put off exploring Swedish for years for fear of ‘contaminating’ my Norwegian. Naturally, you might worry about getting things mixed up. And that can only cement your proficiency in the key language. Seeing how two related languages treat the same root teaches a lot about the development of vocabulary and sound systems, for instance. Getting to know your core language’s closest cousins ultimately means you understand it more intimately, too. Through dabbling with closely related languages, you can add extra strings to your polyglot bow very quickly and easily.īut there is an additional upside to this. That said, we can also turn this argument on its head. Straying from the same path opens up the box. Sticking to the same language family presents just one picture of how language can be, how human beings perform things with languages. And just a brief dip in the water reveals that there is much more to language life than S-V-O! It is a big, wide and varied world of words out there. Its definite accusative and vowel harmony system require IE-soaked newbies to think on their feet. To those focused tightly on Indo-European languages, it is a revelation. Just take a bite of Turkish, for example. Instead of falling back on your automatic, ingrained thinking, you must conceive brand new categories. When dabbling, you suddenly challenge yourself to make sense of new, unfamiliar patterns. And that defeats one huge benefit of language learning in terms of head health: the mental gym, working out the plasticity of our brains with new puzzles. We no longer have to think, or try, with the same tenacity. For a start, picking new ones up is so much easier if the rules and structures are already familiar to you.īut sometimes, material can be so familiar that the element of challenge evaporates. It can be very handy to study languages from closely related families, for example. Now, there are benefits to sticking with familiar pastures. Polyglots, like so many other animals, are creatures of habit. So what can dabbling do for us? And why should we purposefully make time for it between all our ‘serious’ learning projects? Dabbling out the box The extra leaderboard points were very helpful, of course! But the utility of dabbling goes far beyond that. I used the time to play with everything from Italian to Turkish to Swahili, chiefly thanks to Duolingo. Seizing upon that spirit, I decided to make August my Dabble Month. The joy – and utility – of dabbling is just too good to deny it to yourself. Learning to embrace a linguistically curious nature is a healthy step towards becoming a well-rounded polyglot. After all, when we look elsewhere, doesn’t it almost feel like we are cheating on those languages closest to our hearts and minds? That our attention should be completely and unwaveringly directed towards our greatest goals? However, giving yourself free rein to explore can be a liberating experience. Two-timing – or a hall pass?įor many of us, it can be a real source of guilt to stray from our core language projects. And there are so many opportunities for it these days, with multiple online platforms offering quick, easy – and free – taster courses. Dabbling – or the casual exploration of new languages – is when passionate polyglots really let their hair down. But there should always be time for a bit of ranging and roving. Planning, routine and system are crucial in language learning. This year, I made it my month of dabbling! For many, August is the month of holidays. Hello there! This is my first Wlkthourgh ever. It's a shame they'll never get made, but I'm glad he gave us one last chance to say 'farewell'. Furthermore he intended there to be FIVE riddle transfer games in a brand new series. Jonochrome - as the creator is now known - intended Riddle School 5 to be the last of the series. The cut scene and end credits will make you genuinely sad you won't be spending any more time with this quartet. After spending so long with Phred, Zack and Smiley this instalment was about tying up loose ends and finishing the narrative, something which it does wonderfully. This was by no means the best 'Riddle' game but it was never intended to be. The production value of each subsequent 'Riddle' game improves phenomenally but this episode still retains some of the charm of the original's animation - very fitting considering the return to our starting location. A lot of the puzzles will feel familiar too but Riddle Transfer 2 is fun, challenging and a great way to round off the series. The apparent recycling of the plotline isn't the only thing you'll recognise in this game. Far from being hailed hero though Phil is locked in a secret government location called 'Zone 5.1' leaving him no choice but to escape with his friends to avoid inevitable tests and interrogations.įollowing a tale of backstabbing, flying pigs and a chat with the abominable snowman, Riddle Transfer 2 sees us re-join Phil and chums in the sewers of Zone 5.1 where we must use a teleporter to, err, travel back to Riddle School so we can escape to save the world from evil aliens. On that virtual computer, you can run any operating system you like, including Windows, and any software that runs on that operating system. Parallels Desktop is virtualization software - it emulates a new computer in software. Turn Your Mac Into Several Computers with Virtualization In each subsection, I’ll first explore what the app offers and then share my personal take. Since Parallels Desktop is all about running Windows apps (and more) on your Mac, I’m going to list all its features by putting them into the following five sections. Read on for the details! Parallels Desktop Review: What’s In It for You? The content in the quick summary box above serves as a short version of my findings and conclusions. In this Parallels Desktop review, I’ll share what I like and dislike about Parallels Desktop. This review reflects my use of both versions. The new version was released, so I immediately upgraded. For the last week, I’ve been putting it through its paces, installing Windows 10 (purchased just for this review) and several other operating systems, and trying just about every feature in the program. I was provided a review license and installed an earlier version on my iMac. See the Alternatives section of this Parallels Desktop review. So I found myself using a combination of dual boot, virtualization (using VMware and VirtualBox) and Wine. I enjoyed the change, but still needed certain Windows apps on a regular basis. After using Microsoft Windows for over a decade, I made a deliberate move away from the operating system in 2003. Why Trust Me for This Parallels Desktop Review? The only downside to SSBs (and this is true of Fluid also) is that they are not very easy to backup or move/copy to another Mac. So now I have two new apps that I will be using with my Setapp subscription, for no additional cost. Plus, you get Brave’s build-in ad-blocking and privacy features, which I find myself more and more interested in. Unite will create SSBs based on Safari / Webkit.Ĭoherence will create SSBs based on Chrome or Brave which means that you can use Chrome extensions. At first I ignored this, because I had Fluid.app, but I recently decided to take a closer look. However, as part of Setapp, I came across Unite and Coherence – both of which are apps which make SSBs. It seemed like a tool for people who needed to do this once and just wanted to get it done with ASAP. There have been some solutions out there which would allow you to make SSBs based on Chrome, but they were always a little fidgety / twitchy, and often even required using the command line… which I use all the time, but didn’t seem the right UI for this. The biggest drawback is that Fluid.app browsers, which are based on Webkit, can’t use Safari extensions. However, the development appears mostly stagnant, and there are some annoyances. I have used Fluid.app for several years when I want to make a “Single Site Browser” (SSB), and have been generally pleased with the results. |
